Dictyocheirospora vinaya D’souza, Bhat & K.D. Hyde
Index Fungorum number: IF551582; Facesoffungi number: FoF 01263
Etymology: The term ‘vinaya’ meaning ‘separating’ in Sanskrit refers to the separating rows of the conidium.
Holotype: MFLU 14–0264
Saprobic on decaying wood in streams. Sexual morph: Undetermined. Asexual morph: Hyphomycetous. Colonies punctiform, up to 200 μm diam., sporodochial, velvety, dark brown. Mycelium immersed, composed of pale brown, smooth, thin-walled septate, branched, 1–2 μm wide hyphae. Conidiophores 12–19.5 μm long, micronematous to semi-macronematous, pale brown, smooth, thin-walled. Conidiogenous cells holoblastic, integrated, terminal, determinate, pale brown. Conidia solitary, terminal, cheiroid, 58–67 × 15.5–26.5 μm (x̄ = 61.5 × 21 μm), pale brown, consisting of 6–7 rows of cells; rows digitate, arising from a basal cell, each arm consisting of 9–13 cells, distoseptate, constricted at septa, rows appressed when young, inwardly curved at the tip, palmately divergent when squashed, smooth-walled, guttulate. (Descriptions from Boonmee et a. 2016)
Culture characteristics: Conidia germinating on water agar within 24 h, germ tubes immerging from the basal cells of the conidium. Colonies on PDA covering 9 cm diam., in 4 weeks, at 28 °C, with wavy margins, at first white, later becoming orange. Sporulating regions scattered, but mostly confined to the centre of the culture.
Material examined: THAILAND. Chiang Mai, Mushroom Research Centre, on submerged wood in a freshwater stream, 24 November 2013, Zonglong Luo and Melvina D’souza, MJD-26 (MFLU 14–0264, holotype); ex-type living culture MFLUCC 14–0294.
Notes: Conidia of Dictyocheirospora vinaya are similar to D. heptaspora in size, but differ in having guttulate cells and simple, separable rows. Phylogenetic analysis place D. vinaya clustered with a node of species D. bannica and D. pseudomusae, but the species have very different conidia (Chen et al. 1991).
