Dendryphion aquaticum

Dendryphion aquaticum H.Y. Su & K.D. Hyde

Index Fungorum number: IF551825; Facesoffungi number: FoF 01743

Etymology: Named for its habitat on submerged wood in freshwater.

Holotype: HKAS 83997

Sexual morph: Undetermined. Asexual morph: Colonies on the substratum superficial, effuse, scattered, hairy, brown to dark brown. Mycelium composed of branched, septate, pale brown to brown hyphae. Conidiophores macronematous, mononematous, septate, smooth, with several short penicillate branches near the apex, 250–285 μm ( = 267.5 μm, SD = 17.5, n = 10) long, 7.5–11.5 μm (= 9.5 μm, SD = 2, n = 10) wide, with thick septa, dark brown. Conidiogenous cells terminal, mono- or polytretic, integrated, cylindrical, pale brown. Conidia single or catenate, pale olivaceous-brown, dry, verrucose, monilioid, 3–6-septate, constricted at the septa, pale brown to brown when young, darker as the conidium matures, 22–33 μm ( = 27.5 μm, SD = 5.5, n = 20) long, 6.5–7.5 μm ( = 7 μm, SD = 0.5, n = 20) wide. Conidial secession schizolytic. (Descriptions from Su et al. 2016)

Culture characteristics: Germination takes place from terminal cells of conidium. Colonies on MEA superficial, effuse, scattered, hairy, brown to dark brown. Mycelium composed of branched, septate, pale brown to brown, hyphae.

Material examined: CHINA, Yunnan Province, Dali, Nanjian, saprobic on decaying wood submerged in stream, April 2014, Hong-Yan Su, S-059 (HKAS 83997, holotype), ex-type culture, MFLUCC 15–0257, KUMCC; Ibid. (DLU-059, isotype).

Notes: Dendryphion aquaticum is morphologically most similar to the generic type of Dendryphion, D. comosum, but clearly differs in the size of conidiophores (250–285 × 7.5–11.5 μm versus up to 400 × 9–14 μm) and conidia (22–33 × 6.5–7.5 μm versus 9–65 × 5–9 μm). It also differs in phylogeny and thus we introduce D. aquaticum as a new species. (Notes from Su et al. 2016)
