Dendryphion submersum

Dendryphion submersum H.Y. Su & K.D. Hyde

Index Fungorum number: IF551827; Facesoffungi number: FoF 01744

Etymology: In reference to the submerged habitat

Holotype: HKAS 83998

Sexual morph: Undetermined. Asexual morph: Colonies on the substratum superficial, effuse, gregarious, hairy, brown to dark brown. Mycelium composed of branched, septate, pale brown to brown hyphae. Conidiophores macronematous, mononematous, septate, verrucose, thick-walled, branching simple or penicillate at the tip of primary branches, brown, flexuous, 210–335 μm ( = 272.5 μm, SD = 62.5, n = 20) long, 3.5–4.5 μm ( = 4 μm, SD = 0.5, n = 20) wide. Conidiogenous cells terminal, integrated, pale brown, polytretic. Conidia single, pale olivaceous-brown, dry, verrucose, monilioid, 2–5-septate, constricted at the septa, 15–25 μm ( =20 μm, SD = 5, n = 30) long, 5–7 μm ( = 6 μm, SD = 1, n = 30) wide. Conidial secession schizolytic. (Descriptions from Su et al. 2016)

Cultural characteristics: Germination takes place from terminal cells of conidium. Conidia germinating on PDA within 24 h and germ tubes produced from one end. Colonies growing slowly on MEA, reaching 15 mm in 3 weeks at room temperature, effuse, hairy, greyish white to white from above, dark brown in media from below.

Material examined: CHINA, Yunnan Province, Dali, Nanjian, saprobic on decaying wood submerged in stream, April 2014, Xiao-Ying Liu, S-065 (HKAS 83998, holotype), ex-type culture, MFLUCC 15–0271, KUMCC; ibid. (DLU-065, isotype)

Notes: Dendryphion submersum morphologically shares similarities with the generic type, D. comosum, but is clearly different in the size of the conidiophores (210–335 × 3.5–4.5 μm versus up to 400 × 9–14 μm), and conidia (15–25 × 5–7 versus 9–65 × 5–9 μm) and conidiophore branching, which is also penicillate but at the apex of the primary branches. Based on phylogeny analysis, Dendryphion submersum formed a distinct clade within the generic clade of Dendryphion sister to D. aquaticum and D. nanum. (Su et al. 2016)
