Aquaphila

Aquaphila Goh, K.D. Hyde & W.H. Ho

Index Fungorum number: IF 27791

Saprobic on submerged woody substrates, widespread in tropical regions. Mycelial colonies partly developed inside wood and partly on wood surface. Sexual morph: Ascomata superficial, gregarious, globose to subglobose, dark brown to black, with brown setae, straight, thick-walled, tapering to an acute apex. Peridium outer layer of textura angularis comprising black-walled cells, cell of inner layer, elongate, pale brown to subhyaline. Pseudoparaphyses filiform, ca. 2 mm wide, hyphae-like, branched, hyaline. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, cylindroclavate, with long pedicels, apically rounded. Ascospores 2–3-seriate, cylindrical fusiform, 7-transverse septa, hyaline to pale brown, smooth (Tsui et al. 2007). Asexual morph: Conidiophores semi-macronematous, mononematous, borne as lateral branches from superficial hyphae, hyaline, delicate, septate, simple or branched, flexuous to geniculate. Conidiogenous cells integrated, terminal or intercalary, denticulate, monoblastic or polyblastic, proliferation sympodial, indeterminate. Conidial secession schizolytic. Conidia borne singly, acrogenous and becoming lateral as a result of conidiophore proliferation, hyaline, fusoid to falcate or sigmoid, broad, multi-euseptate, apedicellate (Goh et al. 1998).

Type species: Aquaphila albicans Goh, K.D. Hyde & W.H. Ho

Notes: Aquaphila is characterized by translucent or pale yellowish, chalky white colonies, hyaline conidiophores arising singly from the procumbent hyphae, denticulate conidiogenous cells with sympodially proliferating and fusoid to sickle-shaped conidia (Goh et al. 1998). Boonmee et al. (2014) linked Tubeufia asiana Sivichai & C.K.M. Tsui to the sexual morph of the type species A. albicans based on molecular data. Aquaphila formed a sister clade to Chlamydotubeufia Boonmee & K.D. Hyde (Lu et al. 2018). Aquaphila albicans was only found from freshwater habitats (Goh et al. 1998; Hyde et al. 2016) and confirmed with molecular data by Hyde et al. (2016). (Note from Dong et al. 2020)
